Invented in 1886 by Auguste Mustel a Parisian Harmonium, builder. The celesta looks very similar to a upright piano and is also operated by keyboard.
The Celesta can be heard in Gustav Mahler's Symphony No. 6 . Gustav Holst used it in his 1918 orchestral work, The Planets.
Since the Celesta's change by Earl Hines in 1928, it has been known to be used by jazz pionist as an alternative instrument. A great example of this can be heard in the introduction of "basin street blues" by louis Armstrong
